9. Herbert SHALLCROSS [scrapbook] "Chalky" ¹ (Enoch SHALLCROSS , Joseph ) was born 7 Sep 1858 in Biddulph Staffs; He died 6 Jun 1929 in Atherton and was buried in Atherton Old Cemetery.

He moved to Atherton to find work in the then thriving coal industry. In those days the town had many drift mines and 5 deep mines, it also was prolific in producing spun cotton which was imported from America, Egypt, and India, the finished woven product was then exported world wide.

Chalky married ¹ Annie LANCASTER [scrapbook] ¹ on 29 Sep 1879 in Biddulph Parish Church, Staffordshire. Annie was born 5th June1856 in Gillow-heath Congleton. She died 2 Jan 1941 in Atherton and was buried in Atherton Old Cemetery.

Annie worked in service at Rookery Hall before her marriage to Herbert, prior to that she work on the farm her father owned, I’m thinking she had little education as on her marriage certificate she signs with an X as her mark. A branch of her family were farmers of the district at “Lancaster’s Farm”

37	Frederick SHALLCROSS was born 15 Oct 1886, at Wood Lane, Audley Staffs; and died 5 Nov 1960, at 21 Dorset Road, Atherton. This is my Granddad, a stern ruler of the household but was of a jovial nature and saw to his children’s every need, as a boy he worked on the land then when the family moved to Atherton in the 1890’s he attended Chowbent Unitarian primary school, at 14 he left to work as a scavenger in a cotton mill somewhere in the town. A scavenger’s task was to go in and under the cotton looms / mules, to collect spilt material (cotton fluff). Later he, as most men did, went into the mines were he remained employed for the rest of his life. His death certificate records that he died from the respiratory disease “pneumoconiosis” (miners lung)

39	Margaret (Maggie) SHALLCROSS was born 1 Jan 1880. vi Ethel Shallcross Was born 1891 died 22^nd Feb 1969

Anne married ¹ George COPELAND ¹. George was born 1851 and was counted in a census in Mow Cop Biddulph Staffordshire .

She died 4 Aug 1931 in North Brandon Manitoba Canada and was buried in Roseville Cemetery Daly Mun, Manitoba Canada.
